Quick Tip: Although there may be other reasons for poor performance, if you experience a very slow performance issue, the following description may help you speed up your old or even new but very slow computer.

1.) – PART ONE: Replacing HDD with SSD.

Whether you have a new or old computer, if you do not update the hardware from time to time, the system will run slowly soon. Remember: The new system will not be fast on computers with outdated hardware. If the boot (computer startup) is slow, ie it becomes slow at system startup or use, it is a good idea to replace the drive.

Replacing HDD with SSD

Quick Tip: If you have an older computer or laptop (4-5 years old), you may have an outdated and slow hard disk drive (HDD) instead of an SSD that is 10 times faster.

Let's begin:

A.) – If you are already an experienced user, you can solve the exchange yourself, if you know what hardware the computer supports.

B.) – If you simply do not want to spend a lot of time with this operation and actually go to a computer store to buy an SSD, take your computer, laptop with you and, if you have serious intentions to buy, professionals from the store will replace it immediately, and will provide important advice. It's that simple.

Finally you just need to install the operating system, the new Windows 11, if otherwise the device meets the strict system requirements introduced by Microsoft, if not, you can stay with the old Windows 10 (accepted by Microsoft until 2025).

Good to know:

There are three standard drives: HDD, SSD and M.2 SSD.

1.) – HDD (winchester): In the years of Windows XP, there were only HDDs, ie hard drives with moving parts. Their speed depends on the speed of movement. Desktop computer: 7200 RPM /sec., Slower laptop: 5400 RPM /sec. With the introduction of Windows 10, most computers are already sold with a fast base SSD. The HDD is slow: Read speed 300 MB /sec, write speed 150 MB /sec.

2.) - SSD (solid-state drive): Drive with memory, ie no moving parts. It is less vulnerable than a traditional HDD, works quietly, does not generate heat and therefore does not require strong cooling. Even with a SATA2 SSD, any laptop or computer will become fast. The SSD is faster: Read speed: 500 MB /s, write speed 450 MB /s.

3.) - M.2 SSD: It is smaller than a traditional HDD and SSD, so it cannot be built into every device. SSD M.2 can reach ten times as fast as an HDD, or six times as SSD. It is faster than SSD: Read speed: 3000 MB /s, write speed 2000 MB /s.

Attention: When replacing a drive, save the data from the old HDD (or old SSD) to a larger external USB drive, where you can easily restore your favorite documents, pictures, videos after replacement. Ask for information about backing up data to the store where you buy the new drive.

Finally:

Once the replacement is ready, you have already completed the first computer acceleration operation described here, and the end result is a much faster computer. If it has been 3-4 minutes since start-up and commissioning, it will now be shortened to a few seconds.

2.) – PART TWO: Upgrade the RAM (memory).

Even if accelerating the computer is not resolved with more memory (this error is extremely rare), the computer will not be damaged due to too much RAM (Random Access Memory), but if there is less RAM, you will notice slowness symptoms, which causes a slowdown when starting several programs at once.

Quick Tip: You're in luck if you have two slots on your computer's motherboard, so you can split 8 GB, or 16 GB in two. In the case of 8 GB you will have two of 4 GB, or in the case of 16 GB, you will have two of 8 GB. If one is damaged, you just need to replace one, which is a much cheaper solution. Attention: When installing two memory modules, both must be the same, as they can only be used in pairs.

RAM upgrade

Good to know:

A.) – 8 GB RAM is enough for daily use, internet browsing, document editing, image editing.

B.) – 16 GB is recommended for larger games or video editing.

Attention: It is recommended that you create a restore point, back up the data before expanding the RAM, in case of an error, the system and the data can be restored.

Let's begin:

1.) If you are already an experienced user, you can solve it yourself if you know what hardware supports your computer's motherboard.

2.) If you do not want to spend a lot of time with this operation and actually go to a computer store to buy memory, take your computer, laptop with you, and if you have serious intentions to buy, professional sellers in the store will help you in this regard, and will give important advice. It's that simple.

Quick Tip: If the HDD speed is very slow, it may take a few minutes to open a program if you do not have enough RAM. The same phenomenon can be observed with an SSD, although the slowdown is negligible, but the RAM is faster than an SSD.

After expanding the memory (RAM), there is no need to reinstall Windows. The intelligent WINDOWS 11 system detects it and puts it into operation automatically.

Finally:

Once you have expanded your memory, you have already completed the second computer acceleration operation described here, and the end result is a much faster computer, which no longer crashes when you start programs and run games.

3.) – PART THREE: Updating the system.

Windows 11 is set to automatically check for new updates and provide download and installation. Updates released by Microsoft help keep your computer safe, along with feature updates.

It may be delayed, but your computer's security will require you to download and install updates sooner or later, so at least weekly checking is recommended.

Quick Tip: Whether you've installed an antivirus program or not, it's a good idea to check the Windows Update automated service more often (weekly) because Microsoft Windows Defender updates and refreshes the database against the latest viruses wia Windows Update service.

Good to know:

A.) – Feature updates are usually released twice a year and include new features and security updates.

B.) – Quality updates are released more often and include minor fixes, security updates.

Let's begin:

1.) – Click the Windows -Logo icon on the taskbar. In the new window that appears, click the Settings icon on the top right.

Settings icon

2.) – In the Settings window that appears, click the Windows Update link in the left menu.

3.) – In the new window, click the Check for updates button.

Check for updates button

4.) – If it automatically finds, downloads and installs the latest updates and patches, the system will always have the latest files, with the latest version, resistant to hacker attacks (users entering other people's computers via internet), and malware.

automatic download

Finally:

The computer must be restarted manually for the installed updates to take effect. Windows will automatically try to restart the device, but only when not in use.

If you replaced the old HDD with a modern SSD, expanded the memory, installed the Windows 11 system, completed the third computer acceleration operation described here, and the end result is a much faster computer that does not crashes when programs start, or when games run, and the system is updated.

4.) – PART FOUR: Driver update.

Keeping your computer up to date is a must, as it determines your computer's speed and performance. Driver update is closely related to system update. Without them, even an expensive state-of-the-art computer can slow down quickly if you don't pay attention to system maintenance.

Windows 11 acceleration, driver update:

The most important drivers can be updated through the automatic update service built into Windows, but the manufacturers of specialized programs offer better and more accurate search services.

Quick Tip: Using drivers with older versions can expose your computer to hacker or malware attacks, and can cause problems with malfunctions, overheating, video, audio errors, and system incompatibilities.

Good to know:

A.) – Updating drivers regularly will prevent hardware crashes and ensure optimal computer operation. It will dramatically speed up your computer.

B.) – The best solution to replace the search engine for drivers built into Windows, is to use the free program DriverBooster.

Let's begin:

Download from the following link and install the program: DRIVER BOOSTER...

Quick Tip: The program with the driver search function, is powerful and easy to use, Driver Booster offers the solution of updating drivers with a single click on your PC. These new updates improve and increase computer performance.

After the installation is complete, click Scan.

Scan button

Start by searching for the drivers installed on your computer. It scans the system for damaged drivers, and after connecting to the Internet, looks for programs with the latest version available that it offers for download and installation.

After the search is successful, click the Update all button.

offer for download

After searching, downloading, and installing the latest new drivers, close all applications, programs, and folders. Save the work you started (if you haven't already). Finally, click Reboot to take the effect.

Restart button

Finally:

Immediately after the upgrade and reboot, you will feel the acceleration and performance increase even on faster, more modern computers.

If you have updated both the Windows 11 system and the drivers, you have already completed the fourth computer acceleration operation described here, and the end result is a much faster computer with a much more stable and secure system.

5.) – PART FIVE: Deleting unwanted files with program.

t is mandatory to clean the system immediately after a new installation and, after using the computer daily, once a week, because unwanted files can remain after installation - uninstalling programs, after system updates, after mouse clicks, etc. There are several dangers by browsing the Internet, because the so-called "Cookies" are downloaded, hiding among them spyware, viruses, which begin to work invisibly in the background, causing the computer to slow down.

Quick Tip: After each mouse click, or opening a file, the system creates temporary files. These files are used only until the operation is completed, after which they are deleted. If the system fails to delete efficiently, it may remain a few GB of garbage after a while.

Good to know:

A.) – If you do not want to install unnecessary software, you can use your own cleaning program built into Windows.

B.) – To facilitate a complete cleaning of the system, use a third-party cleaning program.

Let's begin:

A.) – Cleaning program built into Windows:

Simultaneously press the Windows -Logo + R keys on the keyboard and type the command cleanmgr (or: cleanmgr.exe) in the search box in the Run window that appears, which will start the Windows program, where you can start deleting unwanted files.

windows-cleanmgr

B.) – Cleaning with the Ccleaner program:

Download and install the cleaning program below, which will clean your system in no time. Ccleaner.exe: (Version: v5.85.9170.) (01.oct.2021). Ccleaner.exe...

Quick Tip: If you haven't used the cleaning program for a long time, or never, there may be several GB of unwanted files, which Windows loads during operations, forcing it to work unnecessarily, which is a waste of time, so it loads slower programs.

Step One: After downloading and installing Ccleaner, in the first window, click the Start button below.

Ccleaner program

When done, click the Make it better button. Below the button, displays the unwanted files found, ie the number of unnecessary files and their size in MB.

offers for download

Step two: Click the Custom Clean button in the left menu and, in addition to the basic settings, check all the other check boxes except Saved Passwords, Network Passwords, and Clear Free Space at the bottom of the window. With these settings, you can securely delete files you no longer need. Click the Run Ccleaner button. Hard disk cleaning will be completed in a few seconds.

the Clean button

Step three: Perform a complete and safe cleaning of the registry with Ccleaner, because after installing, updating, deleting a program, a lot of junk file may remain here.

A.) – Click the Registry button in the left menu, then in the new window, at the bottom, the blue Scan for Issues button. Searches the database in seconds and displays unnecessary entries found in the window.

B.) – In this window, click the Review selected Issues ... button in the lower right corner, then in the next small window it will ask you if you want to save a copy of the database (Click Yes or No, which you think is the right decision).

C.) – Finally, in another small window in the middle, click the Fix all selected Issues button. Clean the database in an instant.

Clean the database

B.) – Download and install the cleaning program below, which will clean your system immediately. Glary Utilities.exe (Version: v5.174.0.202.) (01.oct.2021). Glary Utilities.exe...

Step One: After downloading and installing Glary Utilities, in the first window, click the 1-Click Maintenance button in the top menu.

Quick maintenance button

Step two: In the next window, select all the options except Spyware Remover and Disk Repair, as shown below, then click the green, Scan for Issues button at the bottom of the window.

Buton Scan for Issues

Finally:

Immediately after the upgrade and reboot, you will feel the acceleration and performance increase even on faster, more modern computers.

If you have updated your Windows 11 system and drivers, you have already completed the fifth computer acceleration operation described here. The end result is a much faster computer with a much cleaner system.

6.) – PART SIX: Manually deleting unwanted files.

When you use Windows and programs, a lot of unnecessary files remain in the system, slowing down its operation, because for each operation the system creates so-called temporary files, which the system deletes, but many of them remain as garbage file on unit.

Quick Tip: Cleaning programs don't delete all the remaining files either, no matter how perfect they are, so it's a good idea to do a manual cleaning, which is a bit more complicated and time consuming, but would be necessary at least once. per month (or every two months?).

Attention: Manual cleaning can only be used at your own risk! Make a backup from which you can restore the system in the event of an error.

Step One: Before you start manually cleaning Windows to delete unnecessary files, you need to perform an operation to see deep into the system. Hidden files must be made visible. Do the following:

A.) – Open a folder on your computer (any) and click the View button in the top menu bar.

B.) – Click the Show link in the drop-down menu.

C.) – A new drop-down window appears, where you click on the Hidden items link.

Hidden files

Step two: Close the folder. Hidden files and folders become visible. You can start cleaning the system manually by deleting unnecessary files. You can delete the contents of the following folders:

1.) – The contents of the Temp, Panther and Prefetch folders in C:\Windows\.

Prefetch folder

2.) – C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ in the Temporary Internet Files, Recent Items and Cookies folders.

The AppData folder

Under the username above, enter your own computer name (in this example: John John) that you specified during installation.

Deleting files:

A.) – Click on the folder selected with the left mouse button, then after it opens hold down the right mouse button to select all the files you want to delete.

B.) – Finally right click on the selected files (blue) and select Delete from the mouse menu.

Quick Tip: Do not delete the folder, only its contents. Deleting a folder can cause a serious error in Windows.

Acceleration is not immediately felt because the system replaces the old deleted file with updated files.

Finally:

To restore hidden folders, use the opening method above. Click any folder, then choose the View button from the top menu. Click the Show link, and then click Hidden Items. Hidden files disappear again.

When you're done, you've already completed the sixth computer acceleration operation described here, which is to completely clean your system. The end result is a much faster computer with a much cleaner system.

7.) – PART SEVEN: Disable programs that start automatically.

It may be a new or old computer, it may contain a preinstalled program, or it may be installed by a user that it no longer uses, but it is still on Windows. It would be good to delete the unused ones. Experience has shown that if I start five programs unnecessarily at once with the system, it slows down by 20 seconds.

Quick Tip: Programmers incorporate a function into the program that detects when the system starts, so it starts that program and runs in the background, wasting time and resources.

Good to know:

A.) – There are programs that start with Windows, so it delays loading.

B.) – Disabling does not delete the program, but only allows it to start when you click on its icon on the desktop.

In this description, there are three methods you can choose from, which seem to be easier to stop programs that start automatically:

Warnings:

Attention: Stop the programs at your own risk! Make a backup from which you can restore the system in the event of an error.

Attention: Not all processes can be stopped. There is the essential process for running Windows stably.

Attention: Do not delete any svchost.exe application, as it may cause your system to crash.

Attention: Only delete processes that you are sure are not used by the system.

Let's begin:

A.) – Can be set in all installed programs: – This method is the safest. Launch each installed application, or program you use one at a time, and go to Settings, where you can turn off program startup. The image below shows the Glary Utilities program, but all other programs have similar settings.

Glary Utilities program

B.) – Program embedded in Windows: – If the above example consumes too much time, use the option to start-deactivate programs embedded in Windows, where you can view all programs that start automatically.

1.) – Simultaneously press the Windows -Logo + R keys on the keyboard and type taskmgr in the search box in the Run window, which will launch the Windows task manager, then click the Start button in the top menu of the window.

As you can see in the picture, Cortana and the Microsoft Team program on my computer start unnecessarily with the system, increasing the boot time (boot time). That's why I disabled it, as I did with a few other programs. If you see multiple programs in the task manager, turn it off so that the program starts when you click the icon and when you want.

management button

B.) – Ccleaner.exe program: – If you do not like any of the above methods, use the Ccleaner program, which includes the option to disable programs that start automatically.

Deactivation with the program Ccleaner.exe (Version: v5.85.9170.) (01.oct.2021). Ccleaner.exe...

Step One: After downloading and installing, click the Tools button in the left menu (below).

Step two: Click the Startup button, then in the new window the Scheduled Tasks button. All programs and applications that run automatically are listed.

Step three: Click the program you want to remove, then right-click Disable or Delete.

Tools button

Finally:

If you restart the computer, it will load the system faster (it starts faster). If you want to be convinced of efficiency, you can test your computer to feel the acceleration.

With this you have completed the seventh computer acceleration operation described here, stopping programs that start automatically (unnecessarily). The end result is a computer that runs the system much faster.

8.) – PART EIGHT: Clean the WinSxS folder.

The computer with large storage devices, which has several terabytes, or a larger SSD memory drive, has no problem storing a folder containing 6-7 GB of data. However, a system folder, such as WinSxS, which is installed by Windows and has a constantly increasing size, can even slow down the system in the meantime and can reach the size of a few GB.

The WinSxS folder is installed by Windows and is considered your own storage folder. The path "C:\Windows\WinSxS" is located on the disk.

WinSxS folder

Good to know:

A.) – By updating the operating system, the old system files are overwritten, replaced, but the old versions of the files will be stored in the WinSxS folder.

B.) – The data stored in the WinSxS folder ensures that any system or update, due to a computer error, can be restored to its original state.

Quick Tip: It is not recommended to delete the WinSxS folder on your computer with a program or manually. This does not mean that the WinSxS folder does not contain unnecessary files, ie they can be deleted.

The WinSxS folder contains all the essential Windows components that you can use to restore Windows 11 to Windows 10 older, if necessary, or to restore to the initial settings of the operating system, or to revert to an earlier version due to a driver failed. However, it may contain old files that can be safely deleted. You can use the built-in tools in Windows 11 to perform the cleanup.

Let's begin:

The operation consists of two cleaning steps. Easy cleaning and extensive cleaning.

Each step is similar to deleting unwanted files with a cleaning program (such as Ccleaner.exe), but here you will need the Command Line instead of a program to clean the WinSxS folder.

Easy cleaning:

Clean WinSxS with the StartComponentCleanup command. Do the following:

A.) – Start the Command Line. Click the Windows -Logo icon on the taskbar, that is the Start menu, and then click the All Applications button in the upper corner of the window that appears.

B.) – Windows applications will appear in a new window, in alphabetical order. Scroll down to the letter W (double w) and right-click the Windows Terminal.

C.) – In the displayed menu of the mouse, drag the mouse pointer (do not click, just drag) to the link More, after which another small window of the mouse menu appeared. Drag the mouse pointer over the Run as administrator link in this new menu, and now left-click on it.

Script window

In the Windows Terminal window that appears, use the keyboard to enter the following command:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Or copy from here by holding down the left mouse button until the selection turns in blue, and then press Windows -Logo + C on the keyboard at the same time to copy. Click in the Windows Terminal window, showing the system where you want to paste it, then simultaneously press the Windows -Logo + V keys on the keyboard to paste. Finally, press Enter to begin.

Special settings

Because the operation is run from a script, it does not display a progress bar, the status is indicated only in %.

At the end, announces in English that the operation has been completed (The operation completed successfully). When you're done, click the close button in the upper right corner (white X on a red background).

Finally:

Because this is a clean, basic cleanup of the WinSxS folder, only a few files that are redundant will be deleted, which is recognized as unwanted files. However, if you have never cleaned with this method, there may be several hundred MB that will be deleted.

To perform a more efficient cleaning, use the Extended Cleaning described below.

Extended cleaning:

Clean WinSxS with the StartComponentCleanup ResetBase command. To regain more free space and deepen your WinSxS folder by deleting all older Windows components and updates, follow these steps:

Quick Tip: If you choose to delete this method, you will not be able to restore the system (due to an update error), because the old updates will be deleted. You need to download the old one again and install it.

Let's begin:

Do everything as described above, except that instead of the above command, enter the following:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Finally:

You do not need to restart your computer. You can find out the result (free space size) by right-clicking on the WinSxS folder before cleaning and after cleaning, by selecting the Properties link from the mouse menu.

When done, you have already completed the eighth step by cleaning the Windows system.

9.) – PART NINE: Improving Windows performance.

Enable or disable animation effects with the Performance option: As the computer continues to play an important role in users' lives, redesigning Windows 11 can increase productivity and inspire creativity, with the amazing new design compared to previous versions of Windows. The sounds are modern, fresh, clear, radiating serenity when used.

Design effects that appear after you start Windows 11 are made visible by the display options listed in the Performance Options window and can also be turned off there.

Good to know:

A.) – These basic settings make the Windows interface more beautiful and can add new features, which can bring benefits as we work.

B.) – Disabling some design features can greatly increase the performance of a new or old computer with a very modern and powerful processor.

Quick Tip: More powerful processors don't slow down, but the unnecessarily activated display option consumes a significant amount of computer performance (for example, they become redundant while using games).

Let's begin:

To increase Windows performance, you'll never miss something like scrolling through toolbar buttons or smooth drop-down lists and so on.

Quick open: Press the Windows -Logo + R hotkeys on the keyboard. The Run dialog box will appear on the screen, type the systempropertiesadvanced command (in lower case) in the text box, and press Enter.

More detailed:

Step One: Right-click the This PC (MyComputer) icon on the desktop, then select Properties.

Scroll down in the newly displayed Settings window until you see the Advanced system settings link. Click on it with the left mouse button.

Special settings

Step two: The Performance Properties settings window appears. Click the Settings ... button under Visual effects.

Performance settings

Step three: Another Performance Options window appears where, instead of the best display option selected by Windows, click the radio button in front of Custom. All settings will disappear.

Finally, select the check box in front of Show thumbnails instead of icons. Finally click Apply, then OK and close all open windows.

Displays thumbnails

Quick Tip: The Thumbnail instead of icons feature ensures that icons and images in folders display not only the system-loaded color, but also a preview of the image thumbnail, from which you already know which image you want to view and which you want to open.

Finally:

You do not need to restart your computer. The effect is immediately visible, even on very powerful computers. If you want to be convinced of efficiency, you can test your computer to feel the acceleration.

When you're done, you've already completed the ninth computer acceleration operation described here, making your operating system much faster and more secure. And the end result is a much faster computer, which does not contain unnecessary design settings.

END
